The fourth generation Apple TV went on sale to customers last Friday, with pre-orders also being delivered to customers in a timely manner. The public response to the product seems to be really positive, with many people praising the dedicated tvOS App Store as one of the strengths of the platform.
Despite having previous experience with running and managing App Stores, the tvOS App Store from Apple feels half baked. Beside the list of featured apps from Apple, searching the store for a new app or game is a nightmare. Additionally there is no way to browse apps by categories or Top Charts to easily allow Apple TV 4 owners to find the best apps available for the device.
Jeff Scott from SlideToPlay, however, has discovered that Apple has been secretly maintaining a list of the top apps on the tvOS App Store — it has just not published them for the general consumers. The list of top paid apps for Apple TV 4 reveals that games are dominating the list, with Beat Sports currently being ranked at number one despite its high price of US$ 9.99. Out of the top 10 paid apps, 9 are games, with SimpleX — a Plex alternative — being the only app to make it to the list.
The list of the top 10 free apps in the tvOS paints a slightly different picture. While Rayman Adventures and Crossy Road are the top two free apps in the store, the list is dominated by apps from major broadcasting networks or cables like HBO Now, Nat Geo TV, FoxNow, ShowTime and others.
Beside revealing the top apps in the tvOS App Store, the data from Jeff also reveals that as of this moment, the App Store has 1,025 apps. The list is being updated in real time, though Scott does warn of some inaccuracy in the data being displayed.
